Time for the year’s most important day – Cinnamon Bun Day!
The Sweden Chamber of Commerce invites all Swedes, with family and friends, to fika at IVY in Jakarta on Sunday, 4 October.
IVY is run by Swedish restaurateur Bogdan. In the kitchen is Norwegian chef Christer, a master of Scandinavian cooking who excels at the Swedish specialities (especially cinnamon buns).

The Backstory
Every year on October 4, Sweden marks Kanelbullens dag, Cinnamon Bun Day.
Bakeries and shops in Sweden sell an estimated 7 million cinnamon buns on the day. Some estimates go as high as 9 million.
Several million more are baked at home. More than half of the population is estimated to eat at least one bun on this day.
What is a kanelbulle?
A kanelbulle is a sweet yeast bun with a cinnamon filling.
The spiral is the best-known shape, but bakeries and home bakers also make knots and other variations. Pearl sugar, pärlsocker, is a common topping.
The bun belongs with fika: a break for coffee or tea, often with something to eat, and often shared with others.
A day since 1999, a bun from the 1920s
The day itself is recent. The Home Baking Council, Hembakningsrådet, started it in 1999 to mark the organization’s 40th anniversary.
The aim was to get more people baking by sharing recipes and practical advice.
The bun is older. The kanelbulle as Swedes know it today appeared in the 1920s, and it became common in homes after the Second World War, when sugar, butter and flour were no longer rationed.
Today it is hard to find a bakery or café in Sweden that does not sell one.
Fika – A Swedish Concept
Fika is a Swedish word for a break with coffee or tea, usually with something to eat, and usually taken together with others.
It can be a short pause at work in the middle of the morning or afternoon, or a longer meeting with friends on a weekend.
Many Swedish workplaces set aside time for fika each day.
For many Swedes, the point is less the coffee than the chance to step away from the task at hand and talk.
A cinnamon bun, or kanelbulle, is the classic thing to have with it, which is why Cinnamon Bun Day on 4 October is a good occasion to fika together.
